Senate’s Pension Rush Job Fails to Fix the Debt, Guts Retirement Security

HARRISBURG, – Gabe Morgan, President of the SEIU Pennsylvania State Council and Pennsylvania director of SEIU 32BJ, Neal Bisno, Secretary-Treasurer of the State Council and President of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania, and Tom Herman, President of SEIU Local 668, issued the following statement after Senate Republicans voted to decimate the retirement security of nurses, teachers and other public servants without addressing the pension debt

“Today, Senate Republicans put their political games ahead of the retirement security of hardworking people and the best interests of the state. In a desperate attempt to use retirement security as a budget bargaining chip, they fast-tracked a dead-end plan negotiated behind closed doors, even denying independent experts hired by the state the chance to read the bill in its entirety.

“This overly complex and convoluted 410-page scheme is not the answer. The only ‘savings’ it would produce come from unconstitutional cuts to current workers. To make things worse, it slashes retirement by 70 percent for younger workers who are new to the system.

“When our classrooms are overcrowded, job growth is stagnant and health care costs continue to rise, this is not the time to attack middle class jobs and retirement. Instead of holding the state budget hostage with this terrible plan, Senate Republicans should be working with Governor Wolf to fix real problems and pass a budget that works for working families.”
