Analysis shows expanding Medicaid in the Commonwealth cost-effective for taxpayers
HARRISBURG, April 19– Neal Bisno, president of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania and Secretary-Treasurer of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) PA State Council, issued the following statement in response to the PA Economy League’s report released today concerning Medicaid expansion in Pennsylvania.
“Today’s report from the PA Economy League offers even more proof that expanding Medicaid in Pennsylvania is cost effective for taxpayers and good for our economy. In fact, it states that doing so will save the Commonwealth $4.4 billion over the next 10 years and create thousands of jobs. We hope this evidence finally convinces the governor that accepting federal funding is the best way of providing affordable healthcare for hundreds of thousands of working families and children.
“The report also confirms what many have already said: expanding Medicaid in Pennsylvania is a rare opportunity to infuse $32 billion into our economy and stabilize our healthcare system.
“But most importantly, accepting federal funding is the right thing to do. It will ensure that our children don’t have to go to the emergency room as a last resort, parents won’t have to choose between medical care and putting food on the table, and doctors and nurses can focus on helping patients live healthier and more productive lives.
“Numerous organizations, healthcare experts, and medical professionals believe Pennsylvania needs Medicaid expansion. For the sake of those currently living without coverage, the time to act is now.”
